Beowulf Warrior Hero (KS2) Topic: Beowulf, Saxons [CCLI Song ID: 7181743]
Upbeat, catchy song based on the 12th Century English epic poem 'Beowulf'
Beowulf, Warrior Hero!
This song tells the story of Beowulf as told in the 12th century poem. Perfect if you are studying early English history and Saxons. The new full production track with backing track features a "missing" third verse that is just waiting for your class to write!
Can your group write 4 lines that tell the second part of the story? Grendel's mother...the fight with the dragon? Why not make up signs or actions to accompany the verse too.
You could include this challenge as part of your topic as a musical alternative to creative writing? This will also make a fantastic performance for a sharing or topic assembly, use the backing track and sing and sign along.
Tried and tested in year 3 & 4 topics, teachers say they found it "gave [their] pupils' writing a purpose, structure and enabled them to work together co-operatively" It makes a dramatic assembly/performance piece and brings the poem and topic to life.
This teaching pack includes:
- Teaching video with subtitles and signs
- Full production performance and backing track
- Songwriting exercise
- Bonus stop-motion animated Beowulf video made by me and a small child...be afraid!

“Hello, I'm Al. I started Go Kid Music in 2015 because I believe we need more great age-appropriate songs for children and their families. I used to be a Play Coordinator for the local authority, lecture at Brighton University and have trained in play, creative learning and child development. I studied music at Brighton Institute of Modern Music in 2003 and gained a distinction in Songwriting & Modern Composition. I have toured extensively and produce music and events for families. I teach singing and ukulele in schools where I try out all the songs in the club so you know they will go down a storm with your kids!"
